Columbia University Princeton said lectures and seminars would be taught remotely. Scarsdale, N.Y., also announced it was closing its public schools for the week after a teacher tested positive for the virus.

Thousands of New York City-area students couldn’t go to class in person as the coronavirus spurred temporary closures and shifts to online learning, even in some schools with no confirmed cases.

Amherst's move came after several days of dramatic steps by universities to adapt to the rapidly evolving outbreak. Princeton University encouraged students to consider staying home after spring break later this month, and assured them the university would help them complete academic requirements remotely.

Fordham University and Columbia University, both in New York City, have also began to shift to remote classes.

The individual is a not a student, and is self-quarantined at their off-campus residence.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued special guidance on Monday that colleges and universities should consider asking students studying abroad to return to the United States and cancel or postpone upcoming travel in light of the coronavirus spread.
