A recent report from FIRE shows that while protests over the Israel-Hamas war are driving campus conversations around free speech, administrators and students aren’t always on the same page about how to respond. Fifty-five percent of college students say they find it difficult to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on campus—more than double the 26 percent who said as much last year, before the start of the Israel-Hamas war, according to the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression’s annual free speech survey. That figure represents the highest degree of discomfort FIRE has ever recorded on any issue.

Technology could help get beyond transactional interactions with students. Or it could lead to something bleaker.
