Universities keep suing one another and outside companies to defend their trademarks. Experts say the litigation helps protect licensing fees and stave off brand dilution. When Baylor University sued Boston University last week over a similar logo, it made national headlines as the two institutions grappled over how their shared initials may be displayed.

The government’s missives sought to “substantially alter the legal obligations of schools and educators” without following the proper procedures, Thursday’s ruling said.
