Experts worry college closings hurt the overall ecosystem more than they help competitors. Past examples show enrollment boosts can be small after a nearby college shuts down, but some institutions can still strengthen themselves with savvy moves.

Dale Whittaker announced Tuesday that he is resigning as president of the University of Central Florida, after only seven months on the job. For much of his tenure, state officials have been criticizing the institution over its illegal use (before Whittaker arrived) of state funds for costs associated with a building that those state funds were not supposed to finance.

Liberty, Grand Canyon, Western Governors, and a few other universities have found a new way to play the game that many colleges are losing. Could they one day lay claim to a significant share of the nation’s new college students?
